Best Timing to Conceive?

Question

My wife and I have been trying to conceive since July 2006. We have consulted a good GYN and both of us were tested. My seminal fluid analysis contains about 25 million sperm but the spermatozoan’s mobility was found to be low. For my wife, one ultrasound was made on the 13th day from the beginning of her menstrual cycle and it was found OK. According to the expert we have consulted, we both are fit to have a baby. But until this date we have tried but without success.
I request your help in this regard. I am confused in one part – whether we should meet regularly or should we meet on some particular days? If on particular days then which days? How long a break should we have in between two intercourses to succesfully conceive?

We both are getting very frustrated. Kindly help us.

Dear Jon,

Thank you for you question. You state your sperm count is ok except the motility of the sperm. This may be helped by reducing alcohol intake, stopping smoking, no hot tubs, or very hot baths, also wear loose fitting clothing, and lifestyle changes to reduce stress. These have been found very helpful.

You ask also about the timing and frequency of intercourse. It is true that only intercourse during the fertile window will result in pregnancy, and with low motility, the timing of intercourse becomes even more important. The woman’s body produces a cervical mucus discharge that can be monitored and will alert you to which days are the most likely to result in conception. Once these days are identified, you would increase your likelihood of conceiving by refraining from intercourse for several days prior to the anticipated fertile days, and then having intercourse on the days of best quantity and quality of mucus, and for the next couple days afterwards as well.

As a couple contact a Natural Family Planning teacher in your area so your wife can learn to monitor her cycles and you can both know your combined days of fertility and infertility and the best time for conception to take place.

Best wishes to you both.
