Understanding My Menstrual Cycle
My periods are erratic now!

Question

I'm 15 years old - almost 16. I started my period about four years ago. My periods always were consistent. I've never had a problem with them being erratic. In June I didn't get my period; in July, August, and September, it was super, super, super light. I didn't get it all last month or this month. I'm definitely NOT pregnant. I'm not on birth control. I have no idea what's wrong with me and I don't want to go to the gynecologist and have some stranger look at me down there.

Answer

Dear Lauren,

A number of causes come to mind when you stop having a menses and you know pregnancy is not the reason. Many years ago when I was 19 years old and my husband went into the service and I was staying at home to finish college, I didn't have a period for the three months he was in boot camp. We know that stress can have an effect on menstrual cycles.

Have you started dieting or a new exercise program? Since this began in June were there any other changes in your life.....like a new summer job or change in school activities? Are you worried about college selection or problems with any relationship? I understand your reasons for not wanting to visit the doctor; no women likes to have a pelvic examination. You might be more comfortable with a female physician.

I hope I have been of some help.

Sincerely,

Winnie Neill
