Question

I am 43 years of age and have been on Depo for the last 20 years. I stopped taking the injection in September. Due to the length of time, how long will it take for my body to return to normal, as in menstruation or conceiving?

Dana

Answer

Dear Dana,

There is declining fertility, beginning usually around the age of 40 in the pre-menopause years. Every woman is different but it can take 6-9 months to return to regular cycles in the more fertile years. Your menses may return after a month or so but you may find they are irregular. If you are trying to conceive, I would seriously consider learning to chart your menstrual cycles so that you follow the return of your fertility when it occurs.
