Does an IUD prevent conception?

Question

I have a Copper IUD and have had it for 3 years. I asked my doctor about the chance of the embryo becoming fertilized and he said that he doesn't believe that happens or he wouldn't put them in women.

I am Pro-life.

What is your opinion?

Answer

The IUD is generally accepted to work by causing the uterine lining (endometrium) to become incapable of accepting the implantation of an already fertilized ovum (i.e., a human embryo). Your doctor needs to read more about the mechanisms of action for IUD’s, especially if he would not use them if they are indeed abortifacient.
