Will Cyclogest prolong abnormal pregnancy

Question
Hi
I am 6 weeks pregnant and started with a brown discharge. My doctor put me on Cyclogest and the discharge has gone away. I read you previous article about how Cyclogest is a natural progesterone, and will not harm the fetus, but I have another concern.
Could the Cyclogest help to maintain a pregnancy that was actually aborting/miscarrying because of abnormalities? Would the high levels of progesterone help to keep this abnormal foetus in utero, or would the miscarriage carry on regardless?
Thanks.
Regards,
L
Answer
Dear L,
There are many causes of miscarriage. One cause is progesterone levels that are inadequate progesterone to sustain pregnancy. When inadequate progesterone levels are brought to normal by supplementing with natural progesterone, it can prevent a miscarriage that might have occurred due to insufficient progesterone. It will not prevent a miscarriage that occurs for any variety of other reasons. To address your question specifically, it would not cause a woman to carry to term a pregnancy that would have otherwise miscarried due to fetal abnormalities.
Natural progesterone supplementation simply corrects a hormonal imbalance and supports an otherwise healthy pregnancy.
