Question
I am 20 years old, never had sex and am having trouble with my periods. For the last 6 weeks I am having a period every 2 weeks with the cramps and all. I have both great-grandmothers, a maternal grandmother and mother that all had breast cancer. My doctor says I am too young for a mammogram but I am worried about cervical cancer or some other kind of cancer. I do not have insurance but I am able to go to my doctor for an exam, but I am afraid she will want to do a lot of tests that I can't afford. Please help me!
Julie
Answer
Dear Julie,
I hope you have gotten your exam by now. Having bleeding with cramps every two weeks over a period of six weeks should be looked into by a doctor. The bleeding could be a symptom of a condition needing medical attention.
Given your family history of breast cancer, that should be carefully followed by an appropriate specialist, too. Don't let fear of tests and expenses stop you from getting the attention you need. We all need help at one time or another, so don't be afraid to ask for it.
