Question

Hi, I am a fairly new user of NFP. I had my second baby six weeks ago and have been breastfeeding exclusively. For the past three weeks I have had constant peak-type mucus. Twice there have been two consecutive days of sticky mucus. I can't possibly be fertile this whole time, right?

Kelly

Answer

Dear Kelly,

Congratulations on the new baby.

According to method instructions, if totally breastfeeding, the first 56 days (8 weeks) are considered infertile even if you see mucus, even though this seems contradictory. Total breastfeeding means feeding on demand, no formula, and not using a pacifier in place of feedings. Something that you may also want to consider is the longest amount of time between feedings. If your baby is sleeping through the night (6+ hours) you may be showing signs of the return to fertility.

The best thing to do in this situation is consult with your NFP instructor who may put you on the Essential Sameness Question to see if there is really a change going on for you. Your instructor is there for you anytime you have questions and to help you through different stages of your reproductive life.

It is great that you are breastfeeding and with a little help, you can navigate this stage of your reproductive life with ease.
