Question

I had sexual intercourse with my boyfriend and I am currently age 22. I finished my period on March 10th and the last time I had sex was on the 12th. During the intercourse, we used a spermicide condom. I started to have brown spots on the 20th which is 10 days after my latest intercourse. I am very desperate for an explanation.

Virginia

Answer

Virginia,

There are a few possible explanations for having the brown spotting. One is, it may simply be spotting in response to a hormonal fluctuation, not uncommon during ovulation. The other possibility is implantation spotting due to a pregnancy. Implantation spotting occurs when a fertilized egg implants into the wall of the uterus, commonly around ten days after conception. Even though you used a condom with spermicide, there is still a possibility that a pregnancy was achieved. I would recommend taking a home pregnancy test. If a pregnancy was achieved, I recommend starting pre-natal care as early as possible. Good Luck!
