Question

I am 42 years old and 16 weeks pregnant. I have had 4 first trimester losses (before 9 weeks). I am MTHFR compound hetero (C677 and 1298). I am on Lovenox, folgard, synthroid, progesterone suppositories 400, D3-1000, iron, and multivitamins. I asked my high risk doctor to test my progesterone levels and he refused. I was able to get it tested through another doctor and my levels at 15 weeks+4 days were 24.39. I am concerned that the number is low, especially with the 400 progesterone suppositories that I have been taking. I looked at various web sites and it shows the range for 2nd trimester to be either 17-50 or 25-90. I went back to my reproductive endocrinologist (RE) and he said to continue the suppositories. Do you think that my number is particularly low?

Thank you so much!

Answer

Your progesterone level is too low; it should be greater than 49 at 16 weeks. According to the NaProTechnology protocol (www. NaProTechnology.com), you should be on 200 mg of progesterone by intramuscular injection twice a week. Furthermore, unless you skipped the suppository the night before the blood test, your level might even be lower.

You can find a medical provider knowledgeable in progesterone use in pregnancy at www.fertilitycare.org/mcteacher.htm.
