Question

I just had a miscarriage at 6 weeks. I have 2 children who were conceived easily as I charted my cycles. My miscarriage lasted about 7 days and I am now at day 28 of my cycle (counting since the first day of the miscarriage). We are hoping to get pregnant again soon, but I am confused how to chart this cycle.

What should I expect? May it take a long time for me to get my period this cycle? Will I probably ovulate this cycle? What can I do to maximise my chances of pregnancy is this and my next couple cycles?

Thanks!

Anna

Answer

Dear Anna,

I am so sorry to hear about your miscarriage.

It may take a little longer for your period to come this cycle, and you may or may not ovulate. It is very important in this situation to keep charting so that you will be able to tell what is going on with your body. I would recommend waiting a couple of cycles before trying to conceive again in order to give your body a chance to recover and “normalize.” I would also recommend meeting with your NFP instructor to review your charts so that you can rule out any possible causes for this miscarriage. A low progesterone level is a very common cause of miscarriage, and it is fairly easily identified when reviewing a few cycles of charting. Also, when trying to conceive, you want to concentrate on the days when the mucus is at its greatest quantity and quality, and the first two days after.

Good Luck!
