Question

Hi. I'm 16 and very confused. I used the Pill for one week only and couldn't stand it, so I discontinued using it. Even after taking it for such a short period of time, should I expect a delay in my period?

Catherine

Answer

Dear Catherine,

Thank you for writing and I must say your instincts are good. Stopping the birth control pill for any reason will give your body a chance to continue its normal development toward full maturity which will be in the next year or so. Yes, even for just a week of use your menstrual cycle can be interrupted and it may take a cycle or more to regulate. Every person will have a different reaction. Your first menstruation may be late and it might be heavier. Because you used it only for a week and no damage was probably done, the good news is you have a real opportunity to learn about the care of your fertility cycle, in preparation for someday having a happy marriage and healthy children.

I know making a decision about having sexual activity at 16 can be very confusing but taking birth control means that you will have sex for recreation. You need to think about why you decided to take the pill. Many girls do not do this. This is a very serious matter and it needs to be carefully thought through. You could possibly change the direction of the rest of your life. You will need guidance from someone you trust to give you the truth about these matters. You can also locate a teacher on our web site if you live in California.

This should be the time for you to be learning about yourself and having many interests, choosing wise friends and staying close to family and God for direction and support in your life. For the best results for a happy marriage, the way God designed it, sex is kept for marriage . . . . that's when it is beautiful and loving and fruitful.

My best to you.
