Question
I'm 25 and have pcos...I have lost a little weight and ever since I have been bleeding but it only happens every other day. I guess you could call it spotting.
Why does this happen every other day?
Ashley
Answer
Dear Ashlyn,
The unusual bleeding that you have that occurs every other day is a symptom of Polycystic Ovarian Disease and is often refered to as dysfunctional uterine bleeding. In fact, it is quite common in women who have PCOD. The bleeding pattern that you have occurs when the estrogen levels are moderately elevated and remain constant rather than peaking before ovulation.
You didn't say whether you were married or not but I presume you hope to have children someday. I would suggest that you discuss your sysmptoms with your doctor now and have a good fertility work-up so that you will be in good health before you become pregnant.
I also suggest that you begin charting your hormone levels by learning a natural method of family planning. You then can become a good advocate for your own reproductive health and have a daily record of the fertile and infertile days of your cycle. This chart is a valuable tool for your doctor as well when treatment is necessary to correct reproductive problems like PCOD.
