Question
I'm fifteen, and for as long as I can remember, I've had a discharge. However lately it's been a lot worse. It ranges from light discharge to heavy; (mostly heavy) from white or yellow or even with a greenish tinge to brown or with blood in it. It always smells terrible. I know some discharge is normal but something tells me this is less than normal. Also lately I've been having mood swings, basically as if I'm PMSing all month long. Throw it in with irregular periods and I sort of get the feeling that there's something weird going on. I had a vaginal exam a while ago but my doctor didn't find anything. I'm a virgin, so sex isn't the cause. How worried should I be?
Lily
Answer
Dear Lily,
I am pleased to see a young lady who is so in tune to her body....you are wise beyond your years. First what you describe does not sound normal; in fact a vaginal infection is one possibility. You didn't say how long ago your pelvic examination was, but I would suggest you see your doctor again. Please describe to your doctor what you have been seeing and feeling in detail.
To learn more for yourself, you can read about NFP on our web site or contact a Natural Family Planning teacher who can teach you how to keep a daily record of your cycle. From that you can track your fertility cycle which is an excellent way of knowing about your reproductive health.
I commend you on your decision to remain a virgin and keep listening to your body.
Sincerely,
Winnie Neill
