Question
I was on birth control for almost 3 years. I started on the patch and then the pill Ortho TriCyclen LO. I stopped taking them after the pills I had for December were over. I was wondering if it was normal to get a period and then miss the next one. I got my period at the normal time in Jan but it has yet to start for Feb. My cycle was not regular before I started the pill. I wouldn't get it every month and it only lasted about 3 days. About how long will it take for my cycle to get back to normal? I did have sex Jan 16 and the morning of the 17 before my period started but we used a condom. I haven't taken a test and I don't really feel that I am pregnant or could be. What do you think?

Dear Heather,
When a woman stops taking the birth control pill, especially after having been on it for a few years, her body can actually take up to six months before it will be back to “normal". This is because, for the last few years, your body has been receiving artificial hormones that alter your natural cycle. When you stop taking them, your body takes awhile to return to its natural state. If you feel that your “normal” was irregular, I would strongly recommend meeting with an NFP instructor who can help you to track your cycle and determine if there is a potential underlying medical issue causing irregularity.
As far as a pregnancy, you mentioned that you had intercourse immediately prior to the onset of your period. It probably would not have happened at this time. Conception normally occurs two weeks before you next menstruation. Because you are coming off the pill, your cycles will tend to be irregular and therefore you may have some longer cycles or even missed periods.
Always, if you suspect a pregnancy, take a home pregnancy test around the time you think you should be starting your period.
