Irregular Cycles and Heavy Periods

Question

I'm 18 years old and not sexually active. I've always had irregular periods ex. every other month I get an extremely heavy one. I'm a little worried because I've been having a very think brown/black discharge with blood in it. I know that this is possibly oxygenated blood but there is just soooo much of it.

I'm due for a physical and have an appointment for February 27th. I'm not sure how to ask my doctor about this, he intimidates me a little. Also my family has a history of hysterectomies and I was doing some research and have quite a few symptoms of polycystic ovarian syndrome. Could that possibly be the reason for the irregularities?

Tamika

Answer

Dear Tamika,

First I'd like to commend you for writing to us, that takes courage. I also would like to suggest that you find a doctor that does not intimidate you. Perhaps you can check our site for a medical doctor in your area.

As to your questions, I think that you should definitely see a doctor about your situation but also consider taking a course in the Creighton Model of Natural Family Planning to learn how to keep a daily record of the events in your menstrual cycle. While you are learning this method you will work with a FertilityCare Practitioner who can consult with your doctor who is adept at reading the charts of women. Charting your cycle enables the doctor to know what is going in you body and what the problem may be.

Learning the method while you are not sexually active is the perfect time to really see what is going on in your cycle. You may find that you are not really irregular when you start charting.

Sincerely,
Vicki Delucchi, CFCP
