Question

We use sympto-thermal NFP. I am 6 months post weaning my one year old. I am having a continual ramp up to ovulation but it's not happening. My mucous progresses normally with corresponding cervical changes then, right before I would expect a thermal shift, everything goes infertile. The next day or two I'm back to ramping up. It's requiring lots of abstinence. I'm wondering if this sounds like a hormone imbalance.

Amy

Answer

Dear Amy,

Although six months post-weaning is a bit on the long
side for a return to fertility, weaning does not guarantee the quick return of ovulation and menstruation. We have seen this occur even with moms who bottlefeed from birth.

Sometimes all that is required is a great deal of patience, but we would suggest having an NFP instructor review charts with you. Including a discussion of your overall health and daily habits may bring to light some simple changes that could nudge your cycles into a more regular pattern, as well as help you decide whether to seek a medical evaluation.
