Question
For at least 8 months now I have been having brownish discharge (if not brown it's usually been more clear with traces of blood). This happens for extended periods of time (not simply the few days following my period), but throughout the month. In fact for these past several months I've had only a few days of normal whitish discharge each month.
I am not sexually active. I am not on any form of birth control. I am in my mid-twenties and I have had regular periods for many years with only slight fluctuations. About 5 months ago I asked my gynocologist about it and she said I probably had a polyp. Because this has continued for so long should I be concerned that it is something else? I've tried to read about this online, but most articles about brown discharge seem to be related to pregnancy, sexual activity or birth control.
Thanks, S
Answer
Dear S,
What you describe sounds like something more than just bleeding due to ovulation. If this has been going on for 8 months, it seems wise to seek the cause. It could be a sign of other medical problems; such as cervicitis, endodmetriosis, polyps or hormonal problems. I would suggest you see your doctor again and if not satisfied seek a second opinion.
Best of luck,
