Question

Wondering if I could be pregnant.....

My husband and I had our 2nd daughter two months ago. We waited til 5 weeks after birth to have sex. We have not used protection and I am not on birth control yet (my doctor didn't schedule my postpartum appointment until next week, which is 10 weeks after birth). I have not had a period. I am breastfeeding, so I have been told not to worry. Should I??

Samantha

Answer

Dear Samantha,

Since your baby is only 5 weeks old and you are breastfeeding and have not had a period yet it's more than likely you are not pregnant.

But you can get pregnant while you are breastfeeding very easily. It depends on whether you are fully breastfeeding or not. That means your daughter must be getting 100% of her nourishment and fluids from you and not a bottle to be fully breastfeeding. Ovulation can return very quickly after birth if you are only partially breastfeeding.

A fact of nature is that women will most often ovulate before they menstruate, so it's possible to become pregnant while you are breastfeeding even before you bleed. Menstruation or bleeding is a result of ovulation that happens about 2 weeks before bleeding starts.

I suggest that you look into a natural method of family planning method with your husband rather than the birth control pill. It's a much healthier way for you to space your pregnancies. Artificial hormones in a healthy body do it no good.

Check this website for a teacher in your area.

Best of luck and take care of yourself.
