Question

Hi! I am 13 years of age. I have not had sex over the past 2 months and my period was due on the 5th of November but I have not started it yet! It is now the 26th of November and I am rather worried! Do you know what could have caused me to miss my period?

Thank-you!
Chantelle

Answer

Dear Chantelle,

Since you said you were rather worried, the best answer is to have a pregnancy test. However, I wonder if stress isn't the reason for your late period. Being sexually active adds all kinds of worries....pregnancy, abortion, raising a child when you are still a child, sexually transmitted diseases, broken relationships and so much more. At the age of 13, I doubt that you consider yourself mature enough emotionally or financially to raise a child.

Since there isn't a birth control method on the market that is 100% effective, I suggest that you reconsider your decision to be sexually active. This is a time to be exploring who you are, what you want in the near future and what your goals are for the more distant future. Give yourself a chance to enjoy being a teenager and save the more mature experiences for later. If nothing more, it will reduce the stress levels in your young life.

Best of luck,
Winnie Neill
