Question
I have missed my period for the past 4 months and every month I've done a home pregnancy test and it's been negative. Last month I got a blood test done and it came back negative. I have a history of irregular periods, but not like this. I don't know what to do. Should I get tested again? I know this is not normal.Should I be worried?
Answer
In order to make a diagnosis in a case like this, more information is needed; for example, age, other health problems, medications taken, current stressors, etc. There are a lot of potential explanations, including major emotional stress, premature ovarian failure, polycystic ovarian disease, thyroid problems, pituitary problems, recent major illness, excessive exercise or weight loss, etc. You really need to go to a medical doctor and have a complete age-appropriate physical with labwork, including thyroid testing, comprehensive chemistry profile, and complete blood counts, as well as possibly further endocrine testing depending on the results of the initial history and physical and initial lab tests.
